The Galician researcher Pablo Aguiar has been interviewed in Diario La Región about the European project #neuroATLANTIC, which was presented at the IV Forum # RIES19 and in which the Galician Health Cluster (CSG) participates.
When asked about the programme, he said that it´s about putting in contact and bringing together capacities of research groups, hospitals and companies on a common theme that could be of interest to the Atlantic region. Different agents from France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal and Spain come together and join forces in order to innovate in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases associated with age, such as Alzheimer’s or stroke.
Concerning the goal of this programme, he added, “we will be able to make bigger proposals that will lead to the development of the Atlantic region in this field. From the most basic level, we intend to develop new molecules that are candidates for the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, in addition to reaching a consensus so that it is done the same everywhere”.
Regarding Alzheimer, Mr. Aguiar, emphasized on the fact that the main risk factor is age, eventhough having a healthy life. For patients over 90 years of age, the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is 50%. However, and though he thinks it is a big challenge for humanity, he is also certain that there will be a solution for this disease.
